Town of St. Paul Receives New Electric Ice Resurfacing Unit to Enhance Sustainability at Clancy Richard Arena

St. Paul, AB: The Town of St. Paul, with funding from the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre’s (MCCAC) Electric Vehicles for Municipalities (EVM) Program, has acquired a fully electric 2023 Olympia Millennium ice resurfacer for use at the Clancy Richard Arena.

In a step towards reducing operational emissions and costs, the Town of St. Paul has transitioned from traditional fuel-powered ice resurfacers to an electric model. Historically, the arena has utilized diesel, propane, and natural gas powered units. This transition not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also offers economic benefits by reducing maintenance costs.

Steven Jeffery, Chief Administrative Officer of the Town of St. Paul, highlighted the broader impact of this switch: "By transitioning to EV, the Town is continuing its journey of reducing GHG emissions. Aside from the economic benefit, zero emissions result in cleaner air for our staff, community members and recreational users of the arena."

The MCCAC, a collaborative effort of Alberta Municipalities, the Rural Municipalities of Alberta Associations, and the Government of Alberta. Funding for the EVM Program was provided by the Government of Alberta. Established in 2009, the MCCAC aims to empower municipalities across Alberta to lead in climate change action through energy efficiency, renewable energy projects, and capacity building.

The Town of St. Paul extends its gratitude to the MCCAC for the grant that made the purchase of the 2023 Olympia Millennium possible. This transition underscores the town's commitment to becoming a more environmentally friendly community.
