2025 Municipal Election Information

General Municipal Elections in Alberta are held every four years. Town of St. Paul voters elect one mayor and six councillors to a four year term. 

All municipalities in Alberta are required to follow the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA). Although further policies or bylaws can be created to assist the voters & candidates.

Note: The Notice of Intent form must be completed and returned to the Returning Officer BEFORE a candidate can accept a contribution or incur a campaign expense under Section 147.22 of the Local Authorities Elections Act (LAEA).

If elected, are there mandatory dates after election that I must attend?

A motion was passed by Council on October 15, 2024 that mandatory Council orientation sessions will be held on October 28 and October 29, 2025 in person, provided by Reynolds Mirth Richards & Farmer LLP.

In-person attendance is mandatory for all newly elected officials to align with the Municipal Government Act (MGA). 

It is expected that these days would be full days (both during the day and evening). Further details will be provided at a later date.  Please save these dates in your calendars if you should become elected.

Why should I vote?

Every Canadian citizen has the right to vote in the election of their governments. It is how Canadians choose which leaders represent them. Voting is a responsibility that all Canadians should exercise. Your community is shaped by the outcome of an Election. Voting connects citizens with the political process and with each other. When you take part in an election and express your view, you make democracy work. Your vote matters.

2025 Municipal Election Important Dates

The list below describes important dates for voters and/or candidates.

  • January 1, 2025:  Nominations Open | Office Closed
  • January 2, 2025 (8:30am):  Nominations can be first filed to the Substitute Returning Officer by appointment at 780-645-8540
  • September 22, 2025 (12Noon):  Nominations Close
  • October 2, 2025 (7:00pm-9:00pm): Candidate Forum hosted by the St. Paul & District Chamber of Commerce (Recreation Center)
  • October 10, 2025 (1:00pm-8:00pm): Advance Poll (Recreation Center)
  • October 20, 2025 (10:00am-8:00pm):  Election Day (Recreation Center)
  • October 28 & 29, 2025: 
    • 8:30am: Individual and Group photo 
    • 10:00am: Swearing-In Ceremony & mandatory Council Orientation

(Note: Attendance is mandatory for all elected officials. The Swearing-In Ceremony & Orientation will be provided by Daina Young, Partner with Reynolds Mirth  Richards & Farmer LLP)

  • November 3, 2025:  Organizational Meeting

    (Note: This meeting is strongly recommended for all elected officials to attend. This meeting typically includes selecting: auditors, solicitors, 2026 meeting schedule dates and times, and members indicating their interest and voting to see which Council Committees each member will participate in.)

How do I register to vote in the Town's upcoming 2025 Election?

Further details will be released in time. At this time, the Town will not require voters to register on Voterlink (Province of Alberta's voter registration webpage).

Town of St. Paul conducted a census in 2014 (6004), 2017 (5963). 
 
The Government of Canada conducted a census in the following years 2006, 2011, 2016, 2021.

The Mayoral candidate was acclaimed in 2010, 2013, & 2021.
